This is my only remaining "unresolved" issue - I would really like to play with different settings but I don't want to lose the previous ones!

ok. I'll leave it for now.

gives me confidence too!
A size like large xl xxl...
but you don't need to worry too much : this will come one day as I've already made a suggestion in that way : topic:19253
Please can you explain this a little more (perhaps with an example):
With the 2.4 the system would be : capture the window dimensions, load the picture with a size per-defined bigger than the dimensions needed
In particular, what is this "size pre-defined bigger"?

Yes on the client side : a javascript capture the dimension of the current windows then adapt the display size of the picture to the windows. With the 2.4 the system would be : capture the window dimensions, load the picture with a size per-defined bigger than the dimensions needed, resize by decreasing the display size of the picture
I did stress "in concept". I understand that 2.4 is not complete yet, especially the plugins.
Are you saying that multiscreen works on the client web side, resizing after download, rather than on the host, resizing the image there?
The only problem with your suggestion that the plugin should detect the best size to send is that the Admin can't know all the possible / likely multiscreens that users all over the world might want.
As I said in the last line of my OP:
Ideally I would like a 'full screen' display option that utilizes the maximum width and height without scroll bars

They are not compatible with Piwigo 2.4 yet (it's too soon, I still have to send plugin developpers an email about compatibility with 2.4...)
In my opinion Autosize should not work the same way on Piwigo 2.4: instead of downsizing (which make visitors sometimes download a huge photo before being resized) or upsizing (which may be very ugly) on web browser side, the plugin should detect the best size to send (among XXS -> XXL)

Yes, I agree and for my 2.4 tests I have done so.
However, the option of "full-screen" could involve downsizing or slight upsizing nevertheless. The point is to have the program do the sizing automatically to fit the screen window. I think this could be a multiscreen option but I will investigate the plugins.
I said photographers in a general way, in oposite to some users who create wallpapers databases with Piwigo.
You say you want to increase your photos to match visitors screens, but the bigger screens are near 1920*1200, and even my amateur photos taken with a compact are 5000px wide, I really think the best choice is to upload bigger photos not artificillay increase their size
Thanks for pointing out the plugins.
Are they compatible with 2.4 multisizing in concept and is the upsize / autosizing optional?
I agree with mistic100 that upsizing is absolutely ugly BUT you can do it with plugins Autosize or Cooliris.
I would just like to say that for me oversizing a picture is a nonsense, Piwigo is mostly used by photographs and as a non-destrutive oversizing algorythm doesn't exists I think nobody wants to see his photos destroyed
I general case I prefer a tiny an "precise" picture than a larger a blutty one.
Anyway, knowing that resizing is handled by PHP GD or ImageMagick that are not high-end tools I don't think we will implement an oversizing feature.
I presume you mean 'by photographers', not 'by photographs'. do amateurs not count as photographers? Do semi-professionals and pro-amateurs who want to show off their snapshots to family not count as photographers? :-)
I've no idea about PHP GD or ImageMagick but I'm not looking for major resizing.
I did say resize an image slightly larger.
People have many different sizes of monitor and browser windows.
What I want to do is display a reasonably sized original in their choice of full-screen mode, where the maximum height and maximum width matches their monitor window.
I let other dev to answer your question...

One factor that tempted me to Smugmug rather than Piwigo was the Multisize facilty.
I've now tried Multisize with Piwigo v2.4 and I think it is great - superior to Smugmug.
I like the fact that the theme now displays the image information on the right-hand side, to suit modern wide screens and also the left / right click options.
I'm still playing with different pixel sizes, mainly to find an option that displays the largest image possible without scroll bars, starting from a larger original. Will these also be used for an iPhone?
Is it possible to save my set as a 'default' to revert to?
More seriously, is it possible to resize an image (slightly) larger than the original?
