Found it on my localhost though and manually edited.
I think that has resolved that issue, as the error codes suggest that it's now using the correct login and password.
Unfortunately, I am now unable to reach MySQL even using phpMyAdmin, although I can create dbs with their front end. Time to work on the server side now.
(Round and round the goldfish bowl).
Thanks for your help. I don't think I would have guessed that one.

by FTP, have you file

Download and install to localhost for testing : no problems (Looks functional, robust, addaptable and esthetically pleasing. Top marks).
Joined 1freehosting.com, as they have Piwigo on their own installer.
Tried their installer. It didnt install. (Free hosting, Ok. To be expected).
Uploaded latest version of Piwigo from disk and tried an install.
Entered the required details using the information for the database I had just created and pressed install, run, or whatever.

Possibly the copy I had on disk.
Cleared web directory.
Uploaded webinstall.php
Fresh install. No problems.
Typed in the web db details and tried again.
Same set of error messages.
I did enter the details of the web database, why is it trying to connect using "root@localhost"?
There is no way it will get through my firewall. :-)
I noticed an earlier, similar posting, but it wasn't clear if that was refering to a local or web install.
If I am duplicating, I apologise unresevedly.
Any help would be appreciated.
