In this extraordinary period of global confinement, Piwigo reaches the venerable age of 18. And yes, for a human you could talk about "the majority" but software is like cats and dogs, you count the years differently! In 18 years the panorama of photo gallery software has totally changed. The way of using computers and the internet has nothing to do with it anymore. Broadband is everywhere, at least in Western society, and the mobile revolution also passed through.

Piwigo software has obviously evolved, although the technological building blocks on which it is based are almost unchanged. PHP and MySQL still form the backbone, and are now compatible with the latest versions. HTML and CSS are still there. Javascript, almost absent in 2002, is now one of the most important components for the functioning of the administration pages. The way of contributing to the open source has also changed a lot, towards a decentralization in the form of extensions and pull-requests.

The Piwigo project has also adapted to the challenges. The free software now lives in symbiosis with the commercial hosting offer. More than ever, the success of one leads to the success of the other, and vice versa. The current trend is to see more and more organizations adopting Piwigo. In France where Piwigo was born of course, but with even stronger growth in the USA, Germany, UK, Canada, etc... The future of Piwigo is undoubtedly to develop its presence all over the world.

Long live Piwigo!
