How to debug email

Hi,

I'm having difficulty with email not sending. I have read through this forum post: https://piwigo.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=28551&p=1 already and confirmed all the parts that should be added to the SettingsEditor.

The setup is to use an external mail server that I have created an account on.

This is my environment:

Piwigo 2.9.4
Operating system: FreeBSD
PHP: 7.3.0 (Show info) [2019-01-15 20:25:37]
MySQL: 5.5.5-10.0.37-MariaDB [2019-01-15 20:25:37]
Graphics Library: GD 2.2.5

I have checked the mail log in /var/log and nothing is being generated. I have also run a tcpdump on both piwigo server and mail server to see if there is any activity on port 25 towards the mail server and nothing is coming up.

I am wondering if Piwigo uses the fsockopen module of PHP to send mail? Basically as I seem to be having issues with it even though it is enabled.

Is there any type of debug I can do within Piwigo itself to see why mail is not being sent?

Additionally I don't know if this is related but if I go into Admin -> Users -> Notification then try to "subscribe" a user, the response I get from Piwigo is this:

Error when sending email to User user@ mail.com
1 mail has not been sent.
1 user not updated.

Would anyone be able to help? Thanks.
