If resolution (size) is a Piwigo tag maybe it's what you are looking for.

Re: is their a way to "sort by" the photos?

Thanks to inform us about your objectif: a Wallpaper Gallery.
I understand the sort request.

If I was you, I will build a script to detect the screen resolution of the visitor.
Then I will select categories with the same size and a plugin could hide others on the home page.

But you were not me and you want to do as other do.

Now a simple way is to tag each image by its size. This could be done by a XnView script.
The upload and synchro will create the tags.
Dynamic categories (a recent concept explained on French forum) will display the sorted wallpapers
And simple config will replace the default home page by an Additional Page to select the Dynamic categories.

Not all people want wallpapers only of their screen resolution...for example I my wallpapers are bigger than the screen resolution.

Tried to do it and couldn't find XnView script...

Re: is their a way to "sort by" the photos?

Just a suggestion:

For people who like greater wallpapers than their screen:
Create a second tag like "1024 x 768 or higher" and add this tag to all pictures with Higher resolution than 1024 x 768
