Edit photo description

Hi all,

it would be great to have a button "Edit" near the photo description and do changes right on place (the same as it is possible with user comments when you have admin rights). The current solution (please correct me if there is a faster way): click modify information, change the description, click submit, click jump to image - is a way too long, especially if you need to change description for 50 items...

Thanks.

Re: Edit photo description

Inline editing (just like the "who can see this photo?") is nice BUT it makes the theme much more complex. It means that we could do it for core themes (Sylvia, clear, dark based on the same template *.tpl files) but I don't think other themes would include this feature.

ZenPhoto or FlickR have this feature and ok it's user friendly but it also transforms the gallery into an administration interface in my opinion and I consider that administrators have the right to browse the gallery without having the feeling to be in the administration interface (I really don't like this feeling on FlickR, ZenPhoto made it in a smarter way).

That's the right way.

I advise you to add your 50 photos in the caddie (1 click on each photo) then go to [Administration > Photos > Caddie] and click on the "unit mode". You will be able to modify many descriptions at once.

I agree that an admin has the right to browse as a normal user. But at the moment the admin sees a lot of different icons (edit comment, modify information etc) which do not exist on the user side. So, from my point of view it would be ideally to have a link somewhere at the top of the page that can switch between the admin view of the gallery and the user view. Or even better: to have a dropdown box with all possible groups, so the admin could see how this gallery looks from any permission set.

I tried this option and it is quite good, but it has one disadvantage: caddie doesn't sort images basing on their rating in an album. Just a real live example: we were on a picnic, there were 3 cameras, after this I copied all files to my computer, selected the best, uploaded to my piwigo, sorted them and now I want to describe the picnic like a story: here we arrived, after this we started barbeque, then our children played with... and so on. But it is impossible to write a story when all images in the caddie in random order :) So, I had an idea that may be it is easier to add the Edit button near the description, rather than add sorting order in the caddie (especially if the same image is in different albums with different sort orders).

Yes, you're right. I really think that it would be a very nice feature (I mean "inline edition") if it's done correctly (ie, without disturbing the navigation for administrators). An "edit" link could appear when mouse is over the photo description.

The "problem" is that if you're an admin, and there is no description, you have to display a fake "no description yet..." to make it editable. This is disturbing in my opinion.

For example in ZenPhoto, this is what you see as an admin:
http://piwigo.org/forum/showimage.php?pid=115463&filename=zenphoto_inline_edition_admin.png

and as a visitor:
http://piwigo.org/forum/showimage.php?pid=115463&filename=zenphoto_inline_edition_visitor.png

So, maybe an "admin mode" could do the trick : the "admin mode" would turn on inline edition. When you don't want to manage your gallery anymore and browse it like a normal visitor, you turn off this "admin mode".

OK, I think it meets the proposition I make.

This feature already exists, it is the plugin Multi view

Allows administrators to view gallery as guests and/or change the language and/or theme on the fly. Practical to debug changes...

OK, you're perfectly right, I have no relevant reply to this obvious fact :-/

Re: Edit photo description

Glad that we've come to agreement with the Admin Mode :)

Do I need to request this feature somewhere else (like Mantis) or this forum is enough?

A clean feature request in the bugtracker (Mantis) would be perfect (now that the feature a bit more precise).
