I am interested in installing Piwigo 2.8.1, but I am having trouble with 2.7.4 and  don't want to upgrade on a non-working program.  The gallery looks fine in 2.7.4, but it won't load new images.  I have tried the browser upload, the flash, and moving image files directly into the album editor.  The picture title and all metadata all look good, but no picture and no thumbnail.

Using the advice you have given other Forum users, I put in the local config command "$conf['enable_i_log']=true;" and obtained the following messages from the " _data/tmp/i.log" file after attempting to look at two failed images:
