Looks like Mac OS has built-in support for saving HEIC now. I just tried saving 160MB 6341 × 8453px TIFF file, to HEIF at roughly 80% quality, using just regular Preview. The result... 5.7MB. Wow!

Two years and half years latter, it seems that Heic (Hvec based) was refused by open source community like I initially predicted. If the format it's not adopted by the web-browsers it will never be a replacement for JPEG.

The good news:
1) WebP has support on client side by all major web-browsers since 2019 and also on server side, so can be fully implemented.

2) There is an alternative of high-efficiency image format AVIF based on AV1 codec made by Alliance for Open Media supported by Google, Mozilla, Microsoft and Netflix.

Plans to implement it in Firefox and Chromium (Chrome, Edge, Opera, etc). Firefox already has experimental support in their nightly version.

The bad news:
as it's a new codec AV1 do not have hardware decoding/encoding support (compared with HVEC that have this for years), i don't think is such a big problem for image decoding (unlike video).

Not support in Safari, MacOS or iOS

I tried to do some tests with AVIF, but haven't been successful yet. Seems to be buggy and people are reporting that it is 100x slower than WebP and HEIF.

AVIF support will be added in Chrome 85 at the end of August 2020 and all Chromium based browsers (Opera, Edge) by the end of this year.

Forgot to say Chromium and Webkit got AVIF support. So Safari being Webkit based will probably follow support soon.

Supporting new file "formats" is not the main issue. If Piwigo (through ImageMagick) can generate a preview (pwg_representative) in JPEG/PNG, then the format can be considered as supported by Piwigo.

But is that the point here? Aren't we discussing the replacement of JPEG by HEIC or AVIF or YouNameYourFormat for the multiple sizes generated by Piwigo? The ones displayed in the web browser. That's a much bigger deal because the format must be widely supported by web browser (and not only the latest versions on the latest OS versions).

Exactly. None of this matters without strong browser support and a broad ecosystem.
Microsoft is not onboard with AVIF yet.

By default, iPhones and new Android phones use HEIC to store photos. That's a big deal because the majority of photos are now taken with a phone.

WebP is interesting because its widely supported by web browsers and efficiently replaces JPEG (lighter), PNG (lossless compression and transparency) and GIF (animation).

Which is a perfectly reasonnable choice, but if your phone takes photos in HEIC, you will have to convert them into JPEG at some point.
