I'm changing my mind about how good Piwigo is

Initially, Piwigo was my pick for a photo site. However, after trying these last updates, it's a mess. The site starts with extensive error messages (MYSQL, etc.), and the support has ranged from borderline nasty to unhelpful. So, I'm on the hunt again....

Here's a screen shot of the error messages.

Go to http://photos.jeffbloom.net/upgrade.php and follow the procedure.

Saying that we are "unhelpful" is not very nice.

Re: I'm changing my mind about how good Piwigo is

But, it's true. I'm not trying to be un-nice, but when you're questions are dismissed, that's not nice.

This isn't my life. I'm busy. I don't have time to mess with this kind of stuff. When I take the time to make my own sites, I know what does and doesn't work. It's just much harder trying to figure out somebody else's mistakes.

The other commenter gave me a link. But, the link doesn't work. However, I've already tried reinstalling the update. There's no change.

Re: I'm changing my mind about how good Piwigo is

-we're voluntaries. Helping people take time and people follow the rules not very often (like your current post)
We're not here to be "nice" -we're not paid for that and you don't represent a brand or something else- but to solve problem. So when you say "I'm busy", well... we are busy also !!

- the project is free and deliver "as this": there's no warranty, like electronic stuff ! You don't like Piwigo : well despite all our effort for helping people, we understand and we are comprehensive. Going here and saying that we don't help you... well... nobody forces you to stay !

- "you're questions are dismissed" did you post ? you have only one post before that thread ?!? what happened ?

- according to all our work you would have a little respect for that... I'm sure your have some respect from co-workers/customers.

as it was said, the page upgrade.php is here for you

Here's a screen shot of the error messages.

Jeff, I'm just a Piwigo user, but when I upgraded I had all sorts of problems (search "lisaviolet").  It took weeks to get them all sorted out. (To this day, I still have problems with the sort function; but uploading via the pLoader seems to be what works for me, it's a PITA, but it works.)

What helped me out was when I was told to disable my plugins and start from there (some were not usable with the upgraded version). Another problem I had was I hadn't properly updated my site themes.

I've found the developers here are extremely helpful.  But I have to keep in mind they are NOT based in the US, so there's the time difference thing.   And there have been occasions I need to bump my questions, but they do finally get answered.

IMO, Piwigo is well worth the price I paid for it.  ;D

BTW, I just checked out all three of your posts ( http://piwigo.org/forum/search.php?search_id=985955606 ).  I don't see any previous to this thread that refer to any problems you may be having.

Re: I'm changing my mind about how good Piwigo is

My contacts were by email.

Any way, I'm an educator. I work hard at relationships and communicating clearly.

I've been part of a lot of volunteer technology groups, but this one seems really weird to me. Other groups have really extended themselves to others... I don't get what's going on here. Why is everyone so defensive?

Re: I'm changing my mind about how good Piwigo is

Thanks, Ilsa,

I'm really so stressed by other work... I think I'll just leave it until I have time to just do my own from scratch. I like having control over my own sites, then I can figure out problems (with my limited but adequate knowledge).

Re: I'm changing my mind about how good Piwigo is

Well, I think it's normal for someone to get defensive when they perceive they're being attacked.  *lol* Remember, you can't tell "tone" on the internet. I'm not an educator, I'm a middle aged woman, with a sarcastic sense of humor, having been on the net since '96, found out the hard way how many people misread my tone.

And, FWIW, I'd rather problems be posted here, publicly, so that EVERYONE benefits.

Like when I was having problems with how icons showed up. One of the developers told me it was my browser, IE8, and that I should upgrade to IE9, which doesn't work under my OS  (Yeah, so why did it work before the upgrade, huh? huh? Tell me that! big wet raspberries to him! *laughing*).  The theme developer saw my question and was able to point me in the right direction for the fix.

But had I not asked publicly, the theme developer wouldn't have been aware of my problem. And the problem was with the CSS for that theme.

Just sayin'.

"IE8, and that I should upgrade to IE9, which doesn't work under my OS  (Yeah, so why did it work before the upgrade, huh? huh? BTW you still have your problem of sorting order ? ho I didn't see your post [Forum, post 121725 by lisaviolet in topic 17498] Sort still doesn't sort, sry should I notify plg for that ?

I figured you were just being a brat.  My point to JeffB was if I hadn't posted it publicly, it most likely wouldn't have been resolved as quickly as it was.

Yep, still do. Using the pLoader works, but it's a little more work than just uploading in the admin panel. It would be nice if the sort function worked properly for me, but since I've got a workaround, there's no hurry.

Lisa's lead worked. Plugins had to be disabled. Thanks, Lisa.

Suggestion -- when posting upgrades, a list of things that should be done would help prevent issues like this.

The server that hosts your gallery wasn't good enough.

You are welcome to participate test for next release ;-)

You're welcome.

Aye, but there's the rub...some of the issues aren't known until the users find them.  (Hmmm, kind of like Microsoft Windows releases.)

The problem with the plugins is that the developers of Piwigo are not always the people who make the plugins.  Plugins can be made by users. The plugins do mention (at least here on the Piwigo site) which versions of Piwigo they work with. And the plugins that worked with the previous releases, definitely did not work with the upgrade.  I had so many errors listed, it wasn't funny. Then I added my plugins back, one by one. It was frustrating that some of them I really liked, no longer worked, but they were gradually fixed by the authors, so most of them are back. (I REALLY like the random pic option...*lol*)

But with so many users trying to do so many things, I can imagine it's pretty hard to catch all of the potential problems with the extensive type of upgrade that Piwigo just had.
