Register on Piwigo Showcase
Hi Piwigo Users,
I've been working last week on the Piwigo Showcase. We can also name it "Live Piwigo Galleries Directory". Actually the Piwigo Showcase is a Piwigo gallery itself, where each Piwigo live gallery is represented as a single screenshot, with a date of birth, a description, tags and an URL.
A new plugin is available [extension by plg] Showcase Register : install and activate it on your gallery. Then fill the form to submit your registration on piwigo.org/showcase (currently empty or nearly empty).
The form is very easy to use, all mandatory fields are prefilled. Don't hesitate to fill the optional fields as well, it will help Piwigo Showcase administrators to describe and tag your gallery.
Once your registration is submitted, an administrator of the Piwigo Showcase will verify it, make a screenshot of your gallery and validate your registration. You will then be notified by email, if you have provided your email address.
For now the presentation of the Showcase is not ready, but the registration process is ready! Register now :-)

Wouldn't it be great to enable rating by users on the showcase ?

I disabled this feature for now because there is not enough content, but I want to activate it a bit later. Do you think we should enable it right now?

why not do it now while it's hot and people are more likely to vote.
anyway it makes me think that
- we miss a feature show photos that I rated (orderd by my rate) and photos that I didn't rate
- the algo best rated for this usage is pretty weak (a photo with one 5 star vote will always show before another with a score of 4.9 but 100 votes). dpreview has a very advanced system and some insight http://blog.dpreview.com/dev/2009/01/wi … egins.html and http://blog.dpreview.com/dev/2009/01/wh … works.html

Yes, you're right, in such a gallery or in any "contest-like" gallery, this would be a useful feature.

I totally agree, this is partly why I didn't want to activate ratings. Maybe we could add a simple threshold of 10 rates before being displayed in the best rated page.

The best I could find and computationnaly feasible in Php/MySql is to replace the simple average rate with a bayesian average (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayesian_average). In this formula we could choose C = average number of votes (for photos with at least one vote).
We could implment it in the core piwigo maybe.
What this formula does not solve is
a. time/age factor (a photo one year old had more chances to get votes than one added one week ago)
b. audience factor (public/private), number of links to get to this photo (if already in best rated, many tags/albums, google - more likely users will see it and score it), etc ...
I would like to find a solution for a. which I think is important but I dont have it yet...

The Showcase was upgraded to Piwigo 2.3 today and thanks to rvelices, now we have a much smarter system to sort photos based on ratings, see the best rated galleries
