photos stored in 2 locations, taking up double the disk space

Hello/Hi/Greetings,

I have uploaded photos into my galleries using the piwigo admin panel, and found that every photo uploaded is stored twice.   In /upload and in  _data/i/upload.
Why is this, and how to stop it?

Piwigo version: 2.10.2
PHP version:
MySQL version:
Piwigo URL: http://

Re: photos stored in 2 locations, taking up double the disk space

/upload contains original images
/_data is a cache generated by Piwigo with optimized images

you can't stop it because it's necessary for Piwigo to work

For real?  What a terrible system.   Now I need to buy doulble the disk space, or find something else.

For real. It's a good system. You should do some research before making ignorant statements like that. I would be very suprised if other software didn't use a similar system

Images need to be resized for optimized browsing. If Piwigo was sending full size images everytime a visitor viewed it, then not only would it be very slow, but it would consume too much server bandwidth. Resizing images is normal practice on the web.

You do not need double the disk space. My cache is only 30% of my Piwigo folder size. The cache can be configured in the Piwigo options.

I recommend finding a host with unlimited storage.

It's not an ignorant statement..  using 30%-100% more diskspace than what was uploaded is terrible.  End of discussion.  When you upload photos, you should have the option to "optimize" them, and what to with them.  It's far more logical to display the photos as they were uploaded, or to at least have that option.

Re: photos stored in 2 locations, taking up double the disk space

I'm very new to this software and how it stores things. Is it correct that if you don't use the /gallery/ and sync method and instead just use the web uploader, then you avoid the problem that the OP mentions? As I understand, the software needs the original file and then at least a couple of other versions of it (web size and thumbnail) in order to function. Is the only difference between using the gallery folder and the web uploader where the original photo is stored? Meaning with the web uploader all images are stored in the uploads directory, whereas with the gallery folder method the original is stored in the gallery folder and then only the other versions are stored in the upload directory. Hope that makes sense.

I'm just guessing, but it sounds like the op is mostly interested in a private gallery for personal use and doesn't realize that for websites it is standard that multiple versions of images are created. This is also the case with wordpress.

If someone wants just a personal website for one admin user, then I think piwigo.com is the natural solution, eh? Because it is unlimited storage.

No. The method does not matter.

The original isn't actually stored twice?
