Trying to get metadata (people) into Piwigi

I am using Digikam to hold my photos, then edit them, organize them, and then export to Piwigo (the plan). I want to capture the metadata though, specifically people I have tagged in Digikam. So, I have setup the IPTC settings in Piwigo, and they work, but only for jpg files. I have looked through the doc and can't find any reference to being limited to jpg. I presume that is the case though as metadata.php only works with jpg, the Read Metadata plugin says only jpg, and, all jpgs I use indeed have the tags.

So, my questions are:

1. Am I correct that only jpg is supported for IPTC tags?
2. If so, is there a trick or plugin to get the tags to work upon import for png files?
3. Is there a lossless format to use other than png which would work
4. For anyone else using digikam, is there a way to force all png to be exported to Piwigo (if no other solution) to be sent as jpg?I see the resize dialog, but I don't want them resized, just converted to jpg.
