I got myself a bit of a mystery, perhaps someone can give me an hint on how to figure out what is happening. I got a Piwigo installation with 15 photos (yep, only 15) that I rarely do anything with - I installed it in july 2022. Today I got an idea how I could use it, and started to look at the settings ... and happened to click on the stats page and saw something very strange in august, september, december and january I see spikes in the number of page viewed.
I had expected that there would be a flat line with perhaps 1 - 2 visits/day once in a while. But seems that I regularly get 40-50 visits per day ... which is a huge surprise (I honestly don't know why anyone would like to visit these pages), but even more strange is that I have this spikes with 2600+ and 2700+ visits on two separate days (december and january). To me this is very strange - I rarely see this many page views on my other gallery sites (non-piwigo) where I have many thousands of photos. Does anyone have any suggestion what this could mean? I looked at the log page and I only have todays entries there and all from the same IP address ... apparently in Seattle.

Maybe somebody clicked on the diaporama and fell asleep.
Oh sorry, no offense meant about the interest of your photos.
I just wanted to spot that everytimes a photo is displayed during a diaporama, a view is counted.

Congratulations, your gallery was discovered by search engines and other bots.

No offense taken. I can honestly not image why anyone would view these pages ... but falling asleep might be a good explanation :)

I agree that those regular 40-50 page views might be this, what I don't understand are 2700+ visits on the same day ... I can imagine one search engine do this on a 15 photo site (that search engine needs to be recoded), I also find it difficult to imagine that several search engine coordinates their search so it happens at the same day. A faulty bot might be an explanation though, but still ...

You'd have to analyse IP ranges, I wouldn't be surprised if it's a server farm's permanent crawl of one search engine provider.
