Hi Piwigo team,
I'll admit I've been a bit disloyal lately—looking for album software that could handle iOS and Android photo stashes and effectively replace iCloud and Google Photos on our devices. I tried Immich, PhotoPrism, and NextCloud (which has particularly great and easy apps for this purpose).
But here's the thing: none of them support nested albums. They lean entirely on tags for categorization, and that's just not good enough. Not for organizing decades of family photos. Not for making something my non-technical relatives can actually use. Tags require everyone to learn my organizational system. Nested albums like "Holidays → 2023 → Spain" are instantly understandable to anyone.
My Piwigo-hosted albums are nested. They will remain nested. And after this search, I'm sticking with Piwigo precisely because you understand that different people have different mental models for organizing their memories—and hierarchical structures are how humans have naturally organized information for millennia.
So please, Piwigo: never abandon nested albums. While the "modern" alternatives chase Google Photos' approach and decide there's only one correct way to think about photo organization, your flexibility is what makes you irreplaceable.
Thanks for maintaining software that respects how people actually think, and here is hoping for improvements on your device apps.

Please, can you explain what you call nested albums ? English is not my native language, and the online translators do not give me a sactisfactory translation. Thank you.

Nested means:
An album can contain subalbums which itself can contain subalbums. It then looks like a folder structure on your PC.

Thanks. And there one mean both physical albums and virtual albums ? In Piwigo, both can be structured into sub-albums and sub-sub-albums, etc.

I am not VERY into the exact differences and advantages of those two types, but
Physical is on disk
Virtual is in database
Physical albums
These are real folders on the server. Whatever folder structure you create on disk is exactly what Piwigo shows. Good if you already have sorted year/month/event folders. But it’s rigid — you have to rearrange things on disk, not in the GUI.
Virtual albums
These exist only inside Piwigo. Think playlists. You can put the same photo in many albums without duplicating it. Very flexible, great for themes like “Family”, “Trips”, “Favorites”.
To be honest I now wonder what I have since I seem to recall some conversions from physical to virtual ...looking at the files on one site I see that is not physical, (the contents of /i/_data/upload) since it does not match the folder structure shown in the UI, so it is virtual.

Homdax, I was just wondering what you call "nested".

Albums in albums in albums. That is nested.
The word literally means "inside something else".
Or, in your savage lingo, Mademoiselle:
“imbriqué” (singular)
“imbriqués / imbriquées” (plural)
(according to my favorite AI)
