debian package for piwigo

Hi all,

I started to packaging piwigo for debian :
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=561868

I cannot yet give you someting to test but it will come soon. I hope I can do it this year or perhaps at the very beginning of next year. My package is finish but I'm not sure that it can be included in debian without improvment !

I put the description above :

Piwigo is a photo gallery software for the web, built by an active community
of users and developers. Extensions make Piwigo easily customizable.
.
Features:
  - localization in english, french, german, spanish, italian, nederlands, portuguese, ...
  - tags
  - permissions on photos and categories
  - virtual category allowing picture to be in multiple categories
  - meaningful URLs
  - user comments and rating
  - use of iptc and exif metadatas
  - notification of news by email or RSS feed
  - best rated, most view pictures
  - web api allowing requests or administration from other applications

If you have any idea to improve it, tell me. If you want to test the package now, tell me.

Re: debian package for piwigo

package is not already officially released but for people who want to test it, I will explain how.

Add that source to your source file (/etc/apt/sources.list) :

Code:

deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main

Update the apt base :

Code:

apt-get update

Create a temporary directory (temp or what you want) and go in it :

Code:

mkdir temp
cd temp

Download sources files for the package :

Code:

apt-get source piwigo

It will download theses files :
piwigo_2.0.7-1.dsc
piwigo_2.0.7.orig.tar.gz
piwigo_2.0.7-1.diff.gz
piwigo-2.0.7

Go in piwigo-2.0.7 :

Code:

cd piwigo-2.0.7

Build the package :

Code:

dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot

(If you don't have dpkg-buildpackage nor fakeroot install it with apt-get install dpkg-dev fakeroot)

Install the new package :

Code:

cd ..
dpkg -i piwigo_2.0.7-1_all.deb

Enjoy !

Re: debian package for piwigo

After first tests from my mentor, I need to improve many things but an important one for which you must help me is the description.
Now it's :

Piwigo is a photo gallery software for the web, built by an active community

.
Features:

  - use of iptc and exif metadatas
  - notification of news by email or RSS feed
  - best rated, most view pictures
  - web api allowing requests or administration from other applications

It's a good description for a website but not for a debian package. Any idea ?

I'm not sure I understand the difference ... people who want to download the package would want to know what Piwigo's features are, wouldn't they?

I forgot something. debian package have a short description with  only one line and another one with severals lines. I gave you the whole description and the short one is :

photo gallery software for the web

That description is used when someone list package on his system or when he searchs for a package.
I think we only need to change introduction of the long description which is the same as the short one. We must give more informations. Is it more understandable ?

That makes more sense, now ;)
For this one:

photo gallery software for the web

I'm not sure the word 'software' adds any value ... Photo gallery for the web would be as good, I think.
What maximum length are you aiming to / allowed to?

And for the long description, how many lines or words? I'll have a try at it, if you like.

Re: debian package for piwigo

I'm currently looking at the descriptions for Digikam in Ubuntu-Synaptic (don't know if they are the same as in Debian).
Short description is about 6 words long, and have to be short enough for the Description column.

Long description is ... rather long, about the height of the screen and half-wide (have to scroll of course). Interesting is the link to download a screen-copy.

Would you like something like that for Piwigo?

An other idea : Highly-customizable photo gallery for the web

Re: debian package for piwigo

Short description must be short and must not exceed 60 chars.
I don't think there's a limit for long description.

Re: debian package for piwigo

Here is a draft. Feel free to criticize and dismantle it ;)

Piwigo is a photo gallery software for the web, built by an active community of users and developers.
It comes with powerful features to publish and manage your collection of pictures, and provide numerous extensions among which you can pick up your choice to customize and design your very own gallery. In case you feel like going further, the Piwigo team and community will be happy to provide support so you can create an extension on your own.
======
Started back in 2002 as a personal software to manage a familial gallery, the project has largely developed over the frontiers, thanks to a dedicated developers team, and a growing and active community of users.
All over the world (it is currently translated in 18 languages), Piwigo is used to manage and display photos on the net, from the 10-photos of a Saturday party to professional banks of several thousand pictures. This versatility is supported by smart browsing capabilities based on tags, categories and chronological search.  Various extensions make Piwigo even more scalable and customizable to suit your own needs and desires.
Piwigo is not only free and opensource; it is also both web and photo standards compliant.

Take the 3 easy steps:
=======
1- Upload your photos onto your gallery
You can either use Ploader, the remote client for Piwigo, that allows you to select your photos on your computer and transfer them to your gallery; or perform a bulk-load with the FTP client of your choice, then use the synchronization function.
=======
2- Organize and display your gallery to your liking
Build a category-tree to organize and display your photos: each photo can belong to several categories, visitors can browse through one category or a whole sub-tree at a time, different permissions can be affected to each category.
Affect tags to your photos, so visitors can browse through the gallery, starting from the tags cloud and navigating via multiple related tags.
Calendar views provide the means for chronological navigation.
Piwigo can also display the metadata (EXIF) recorded with your pictures.
=======
3- Let your visitors rate and comment
It is your privilege to choose who can see, rate, and comment your photos. Create users and groups, give them (or not) the access to all or part of your gallery, and the opportunity to express themselves.

=======
Minimum prerequisite to create a Piwigo gallery
A hosting space with MySQL 5 and PHP 5

Re: debian package for piwigo

Any news on this?
Is the packaging available as a Git tree?
A new Standards-Version is posted: http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-an … 00006.html
The long description tosca proposed is way too long; but the one in the last package posted is quite OK.

Yes but on a private git repository as I'm the only maintainer for the moment !

Good news!

Do you still open for maintaining it together? It's a small package, I don't think it needs both of us, it's just a question.

There's no problem. The package is being uploaded and I hope it will be accepted soon.

I don't need help for that package but if I need in the future I will open my repository !

But as I said for pLoader and if you want to I can open a git repository to maintain ploader with you.
I used git-buildpackage for piwigo and I can use it for pLoader !
