thanks PLG, i did see that plugin but i don't speak french so passed on it.
if it's the only option i'll have a try.

i'm rapidly losing faith with piwigo though, first the ploader stops working which is a total disaster and now i need to speak french for this ;)

YES its is possible to download a whole album in a ZIP files, you just have to use the "Batch Downloader" plugin : https://piwigo.org/ext/extension_view.php?eid=616
