Piwigo 2.2 planning

Hi coding team,

Let's talk about Piwigo 2.2 and planning.

I consider that the coding strategy for Piwigo 2.1 produced a nice result. I mean giving a release date instead of a list of features. In the end, Piwigo 2.1 had many new and nice features. In the end, Piwigo 2.1 was released 45 days after the expected date, let's try to make it even better this time!

updated on December 12th, 2010 : the goal is to release Piwigo 2.2.0RC1 before the end of 2010. And then propose RC2/RC3/final in a 1.5 or 2 months period.

If you want to tell which features you plan to work on before this date, please drop a line on this topic.

In a perfect world, we would have all what's expected for Piwigo 2.2 on the Roadmap Page (but it doesn't mean we can't release Piwigo 2.2 until all is done, because we can change the target version in the bugtracker if we realize we won't have enough time).

Please use this topic as way to list the features you plan to work on or wish to have or not have for Piwigo 2.2. If you want to discuss about implementation of a specific feature, please open a fresh topic :-)

Re: Piwigo 2.2 planning

Here is the list of features I plan to work on for Piwigo 2.2

* officially rename "category" into "album" and "image/element/picture" into "photo"
* [already done] new method pwg.images.addSimple (it is a plugin currently, but it will be integrated into standard code), the purpose it to make it easier to upload photos with the API.
* new design on the bulk manager (with filters and presets, only one action at once)
* new design on the album manager (ability to manage the album tree with jQuery)
* replace the current user upload form with the new admin upload form
* ability to use ImageMagick instead of GD for image processing (resize, rotate, crop)
* ability to delete a single photo without using the bulk manager
* merge/split tags
* new ergonomy to add tags, as discussed in [Forum, post 112013 by plg in topic 15260] Improving the "add tags to photo" form
* new design on the user manager (Jquery "datatables" plugin to manage the user list), 1 action at once
* browse by authors
* new field images.added_by
* add RSS feeds on each category and each photo
* easier configuration for IPTC mapping and use of grum's library to read IPTC/XMP
* default privacy level for photos and for users
* take care of privacy level for "representative photo" of an album

Yes, it's a long list and I'm sure I won't have enough time to do it all. The time will decide which features will be postponed for Piwigo 2.3 in 2011!

Re: Piwigo 2.2 planning

I'll try to follow you on this roadmap. I have some time now to upgrade translations and Piwigo's pages. But from September to November, I think I'll be very busy.

Re: Piwigo 2.2 planning

I want to add translation with gettext support but it's lot of work out of piwigo (translation platform) and I'm not sure it could be included for end of september.

Re: Piwigo 2.2 planning

I propose:
* 2010-09-24 : 2.2.0RC1
* 2010-10-01 : 2.2.0RC2
* 2010-10-08 : 2.2.0RC3
* 2010-10-15 : 2.2.0
//////////////////////////////////////

happened with the dates for the versions of Piwigo?
perhaps a dead project?

still going to be version 2.2?

Re: Piwigo 2.2 planning

Hi jimmy,

Piwigo is not a dead project. Obviously the planning is not matching reality, but we will try to release Piwigo 2.2.0RC1 before the end of the year (20 days left...)

There are already some changes (mostly at technical level) but release 2.2 won't be as full of new features compared to Piwigo 2.1, but this is not really a problem.

What about get_extent ? (With the new sprites the distributed extent tpls do not work anymore and I dont feel like changing them)

No, we'll keep the template extensions for the moment. I really don't like them because you can nearly do the same thing with a theme, but they have several advantages:

1) they apply to all themes (I personally think this is not very smart considering the differences between Gally and Simple for example)

2) for a given theme on a given page, you can set a condition to load picture-first.tpl or picture-second.tpl

3) you can edit them with [extension by Piwigo Team] LocalFiles Editor
