When I was running a Wordpress blog, I think there was an extension to backup the database and email it to me. I was able to choose how often I wanted this done and I would receive an email with the zip file attached.

Is there something similar for Piwigo? I am unable to find anything from a Google search.

Also, what is the best way to backup my site? My hosting service allows a weekly backup of my entire site automatically by paying $39 per year which I have enrolled for.

What do other people do so that if the site is hacked (like my Wordpress site was) it is possible to revive the site as easily as possible. My site has over 5GB of photos so I am open to suggestions.

i use the Mysqldumper for my database backup.

BACKUPS! :-)
i have a local backup (files and mysql) from the content of my domains on my home pc.

I've had a look at that software and it sounds like the solution to my problem.

I have plenty of hard disk space and bandwidth so with your suggestion of keeping a local copy, I simply have to keep a copy of the 'upload' folder (in its complete structure) on my hard drive at home, yes?

If the site gets damaged, then:

1. I do a fresh install.
2. Import the database from the backups that Mysqldumper produces.
3. Upload via ftp the contents of my local hard drive's 'upload' folder into the new 'upload' folder on the server and I should be good to go.

Is this correct?

Yes, it's correct. Keep also the "local" folder. There you may find some specific CSS files if you use plugin LocalFiles Editor.

OK. I have everything going now in terms of Mysqldumper. I've set it up and tested it. It sends me a zip file via email etc.

One thing I don't know how to do is set it so that a backup is created say, once a day.

I have configured it so that it only keeps two previous versions of the backups but there doesn't seem to be a way to automatically run the backup.

Am I correct in assuming that a schedule cannot be set?

ask in the supportforum of mysqldumper, this has something to do with cron jobs (i dont work with that)

I cannot begin to express my thanks to Lloyd Borrett who has written this brilliant article on how to automate the backing up of MySQL databases. Thank you so much Mr Borrett.

For other newbies who want to know how to do this, here is a step-by-step guide I came across by accident. I haven't tried it yet but just by reading through the article, it seems to be straight forward.

Hope this helps anyone who is interested and again, thanks to the author for taking the time to write such a detailed tutorial.
