Plugins active: Community, Language Switch, LocalFiles Editor

New install/use.
Community options were left as default.
User was uploading pics - 18 an email was received to validate pics, which was done
Uploader created another album under communites
all went fine - pics in album are visible.

Then I changed community options to "high trust" to avoid the validation step.

A while after that, when I go into batch editor and select all pictures, there are 48 more pictures from the same user marked with "Pending".

Selecting those manually by clicking the selection box (could not find a filter) and either associating or moving the selection to either an existing or new album - whatever action was done, it failed.
The selected pictures still have the status "pending" and the target directories are empty.

How can those "pending" pictures managed to moved to an album?

Changing the community options back to "low trust" and uploading another picture to a community album did not create a validation email.

Chosing any sensible option under Maintenance (repair/initialize) did not change the described behavior.

Any idea/suggestion what to do is appreciated.
