Your code changes are working pretty well. Until now I recognized two issues.
1. thumbnails for movies don't work (with 2.7 RC)
2. when I use simpleng as template, the thumbnails don't work. simpleng tries to open an image called cu. CU is not yet implemented in your changes. The cu images have names like: 20140829131346-0b2c9021-cu_e250.jpg

Any idea how to solve this issues?

I love that you work on this issue!!! I also have a private gallery and want be sure that nobody can access the photos without permission.

Please think about to implement your improvments in the core or build a plugin - most of users here are photographers and no developers - like me ;-)
