Reading titles from XMP metadata on import, saving back to file

Hi all,

I'm migrating from iPhoto and Gallery 3 to a different product, either Piwigo or Zenphoto, that will replace both (ie I'll upload and manage my photos direct from camera to cloud). For now I'm leaning towards Piwigo because of its iOS app so I can easily upload straight from my phone.

However I do have one feature that I want that's not clear whether it's supported by either. I want to be able to import titles for my photos from XMP metadata in the file, and also to have titles that I may set in the Piwigo/Zenphoto software saved back into the file as XMP metadata so that if I access those photos in other software that can read that metadata from the file, I don't have to re-enter the titles.

Does Piwigo support this? Does Zenphoto? Cross-posting to both groups.

Re: Reading titles from XMP metadata on import, saving back to file

Hi Terminus,

Piwigo doesn't read XMP metadata. Not if we can't read them as we read EXIF/IPTC. Can you give me a sample photo so that I can give a try?

With plugin [extension by plg] Write Metadata you can write photo properties back to IPTC (requires exiftool on your server)

Here's an example that has a Title in the metadata.

Re: Reading titles from XMP metadata on import, saving back to file

When I run tools/metadata.php on your photo, I get:

IPTC Fields in sample.jpg

1#090 = %G
2#000 =
2#005 = Green butterfly on cosmos flower

Is it OK for you? If yes, then Piwigo can read it, and write it back with [extension by plg] Write Metadata

Perfect, then I think I've found my new photo management and gallery software!

Thanks.

Re: Reading titles from XMP metadata on import, saving back to file

Hmm, what did I do wrong?  I started importing my photos into Piwigo, and it didn't capture the titles.  The message that I get is:

Metadata synchronization results

196 photos' information synchronized with files metadata
196 photos candidates for metadata synchronization
Metadata used : filesize, width, height, date_creation, latitude, longitude

First step would be to describe what you did, so we could help saying what was wrong

Re: Reading titles from XMP metadata on import, saving back to file

I had about 5000 photos, like the one that I attached above with the butterfly on the flower, which had titles in their metadata. I saved them to piwigo's gallery directory then synchronised. I expected that the titles would be imported. They weren't.

I also tried using the Piwigo iPhoto plugin but it seems that I would have to create all my (hundreds of) albums manually that way, so I'll avoid that if I can.

ok So read http://piwigo.org/doc/doku.php?id=user_ … onf_locale and check $conf['use_iptc']

Re: Reading titles from XMP metadata on import, saving back to file

Thanks, now it works after adding $conf['use_iptc'] = 'true';
