I'm a Piwigo newb here, in the process of converting from a Gallery 3 implementation. As such I'm used to my albums being in a physical structure and I very much like it from a DR perspective. With my Gallery setup, I have a cron job scheduled to sync the folder structure to a CIFS share just incase something goes massively wrong, at least then I will have my images organized in an understandable fashion. I understand the whole virtual vs physical album setup in Piwigo and also understand that if I want to go physical, I have to use FTP, synchronize, batch manager etc. But I'd prefer the upload option. It sounds like I'm just out of luck and if I want the standard upload functionality, I need to embrace virtual albums.
Is that correct?
If that's so, has anyone come up with a process to export the images from the virtual album combined with data from the database to recreate the folder/album structure? I've found one such solution: http://piwigo.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=22934, but I'm wondering what others are doing.

I am also a migrated G3 user wishing to clarify virtual vs. actual.
Are you asking about piwigo's ability to sync images you 'direct upload',
with the ./galleries/ folder structure which has existing images/subdirectories
without using an extension ?
I would also like to know if it is possible to sync files uploaded with direct upload,
with existing images/directories in the ./gallery/ folder structure, preserving the
original filename.
Problem is, I've uploaded other images with the direct-upload
web page (works well), and I want to sync those images to the ./galleries
directory but Piwigo changes all of the original images filenames.

Also looking for a Gallery3 migration option. I like the physical flat file system of Gallery3. From the lack of responses to this thread, I am getting the feeling of "SOL" from Piwigo community.
Meh. Too bad. I would think in the next 6-12 months there would be a large number of users looking for an alternative to Gallery3 as it ages and has no further development.
Also a former G3 user... using FTP to manage.
There was talk of setting up a cron job to force the sync process within piwi...
But you are still managing via FTP.
If you've read the forums, the standard answer becomes that when you download your images.... the file names come back out as they were put in.
But I agree with you guys... for a DR standpoint and a sorting standpoint... it's not ideal for me either.
I've learned to live with it and have completely disabled the upload functionality.
lightsout: To maybe clarify your question... yes, you can migrate all of your physical directories to "galleries" - run the sync and everything will show up (search the forums here for the modified local file string if you use spaces or anything more than "regular" alphabet letters).
You can then use the upload/virtual folders as well... the images (physical vs virtual) will be kept separate from one another.
I have not tried jimaek's tool (from the OP's post)... I just decided not to deal with the virtual folders.
