Restricting downloads?

Hi,

I want it that the guest and registered user groups are unable to download, but other groups are able to download from particular albums. Is this possible?

Hi,
you can give a try to the plugin Download Permissions

Re: Restricting downloads?

I have a similar need, but not quite the same.

In the modus theme I want non-logged in visitors to see an album but not have the option to download.

I'm kind of surprised download is activated by default!  Is there a sinple way to switch it off.  If so I can't find it.

Thanks

Peter

Re: Restricting downloads?

Hi Peter,

From your description it seems my need was the same.

In reality, if you don't use a plugin, you can't turn off downloading. The idea is to hide the download button in the display.

Check out the following image...

1. Select Configuration
2. Select Options
3. Select Display tab
4. Unselect Activate icon "Download this File"

If you want to control who can download an image you need to establish groups and set download permissions with the Download Permissions plugin. If you want to minimize harvesting of your images you may wish to try the rightClick plugin.

Re: Restricting downloads?

Hi Simon

Thnks for that.

I've found the page and the Activate icon "Download this File" item.

However nothing happens when I click on it.

The same applies to all of the other configuration options.

Is there something I have to do before I can activate or deactivate options?

Re: Restricting downloads?

Click on save settings,  then wait until page refreshes

or

'clear your cache' in your browser then refresh your screen.

Re: Restricting downloads?

Excellent thanks, I clicked the Activate icon "Download this File" item and saved, and now the icon has disappeared from the image page.

However, there is no visible change on the configuration page.  In other words for the option Activate icon "Download this File" there is no indication whether the icon is activated or not.  Previously it did not say Deactivate icon "Download this File", so from the config page there is no way to know the current state of activation or deactivation.  Is that normal?

Re: Restricting downloads?

The problem you are having, I also had.

Administrators see all options. Log-out and view your page as a guest and you will see that the option to download is gone.

In regards to the setting being set or not, noting whether the option is checked / unchecked is the only way for the administrator to see if the setting is on or not.

Re: Restricting downloads?

Thanks, by "noting whether the option is checked / unchecked" do you mean for example noting whether the download icon appears on the image page for guests or not?

Re: Restricting downloads?

That is one way.

The other is to look in your settings. I have my downloads turned off.

If you look in my configuration settings (as described previously) the option to show the icon is unchecked.

Re: Restricting downloads?

Hey Peter,

If the option to show the download icon is checked but the icon is not present then you may be looking at a cached version of your webpage. I found in changing my setting that I had a 5-10 minute delay in seeing changes that I made. Very confusing.

Clearing the cache and refreshing the browser usually, and I mean not always, showed the changes I made. Very frustrating and confusing. Not sure if this is due to the theme or the server configuration.

Re: Restricting downloads?

Ah, there's something wrong with my installation then, as I have boxes but no checks - see uploaded file

Re: Restricting downloads?

Now uploaded to previous post.

The rectangles where the check should be have letters in them - very small but I think they are E8IF or ESIF.
