Server backup question

Hello/Hi/Greetings,

I have been using Piwigo for more than a year now and it is A GREAT server!!!
I work on server backup now and I wonder, what would be the best way to back up Piwigo so it will take minimum time to set on another PC.
I backup my whole system (/) and of course all my pictures and video. Is there anything else to backup to make a complete restore faster and easier is case of a disaster?

Thanks a lot,
Daniel.

Piwigo version:  2.7.1
PHP version: PHP 5.3.10-1ubuntu3.19
MySQL version: 5.5.44-0ubuntu0.12.04.1
Piwigo URL: LAN only

Re: Server backup question

You need to make sure you're also backing up the database. Usually this is done with mysqldump to save an SQL file to some place within the directories that you're backing up already.

As for Piwigo data, (my understanding is that) one only needs to backup the 'upload' and 'local' directories.

I can't find a page in the documentation wiki about backing up...

Re: Server backup question

Thanks, I do backup my entire SQL server and I do not use the "upload" directory (I manually add new photos to the server and sync).
Thanks for the advice, I added "local" directory to my backup.
Now, to restore Piwigo I should:
1.    Install Piwigo
2.    Restore MYSQL table
3.    Replace the "local" directory with the one I bucked up.
Do I have to do anything else? How about plugins, gallery, etc…?

Re: Server backup question

Yep, that sounds correct. I'm not sure about plugins: I don't *think* they're supposed to store anything anywhere else, but I did read somewhere about a plugin storing things in _data (which is usually only for transient, re-creatable, generated things), but I guess it'd be hard to know which plugins do it and which don't.

I'm doing exactly what you say (via my backup script) and so far as I can tell it works perfectly.

Re: Server backup question

Check out the list of directories in Step 5 of the upgrade manual: http://piwigo.org/basics/upgrade_manual

(see also: [Forum, post 161199 by plg in topic 26042] 'How to backup' page in the documentation )

Re: Server backup question

Thanks for the link. It seems that there is no way to backup plugins.
I wonder though, if I backup the entire "/" can I just restore the whole thing (after installing a fresh Piwigo – same version) by copying the whole /var/www/piwigo directory?

Re: Server backup question

I was attempting to do that, but it ended up only working particularly cleanly when I deleted everything in _data -- then all was fine, so yeah you'd then have a backup of everything else.
