Hey, is it at all possible to have a message on the home page only visible when not logged in giving instruction how to join up, then when a member logs in they will only see the galleries and not this message?

I believe you can do this with PWG Stuffs.
Create a personal block - turn on "Authorized groups" - and set it to guests
You may want to put the block on "line A"
You could also add a login block right next to it
