GPS EXIF strangeness

Hello,
I am new to PWG. Just migrated from Menalto two days ago.
PWG looks great and easy to handle.
Import went well, thanks to the great plugin.

All works well except for GPS longitude/latitude tags.
They are read but not always... Depending on an album this could be 50-100% success.
(It was much worse when I was on PHP 5.5.
PHP 7.2 improved it a lot but not 100%).

In one particular album - same camera, same tagging software (GeoSetter). Only 14 out of 24 are read.
All other EXIF/IPTC tags are read correctly.

Any idea? Anyone?

Thanks!

Max

Re: GPS EXIF strangeness

Hi and welcome. This problem has been covered in the forum. I'm too lazy to search it up for you right now, but it's there. Search "GPS exif extension"

Re: GPS EXIF strangeness

OK.
Answering my own question. Yes. It all boils down to the Makers Notes. Those pictures which have been edited in Photoshop are read correctly since they have Makers Notes removed.

Now. The workaround would be to use either  ExifTool or ImageMagick plugins. I don't have ExifTool. ImageMagick I do have (it's 1&1 hosting) but the plugin wouldn't install saying "you need to install imagick PHP extension". That extension is not available for the current PWG release.

Re: GPS EXIF strangeness

GPS exif extension gives me error messages and doesn't work.
GPS Imagemagick extension won't install/activate at all.

Re: GPS EXIF strangeness

Did some reading here and googling...

-- stripping makernotes with exiftool works
(but I really want ImageMagick do the work for me)

-- can't get GPS ImageMagick to activate.
ImageMagick is installed and PWG shows it active but GPS ImageMagick says "To install this plugin, you need to install imagick PHP extension before".
--> how do I do that?
put extension=imagick.so in php.ini? I tried to put it in a local php.ini - didn't help. I do not have an access to the global php.ini (I am on 1&1 linux hosting plan).

Can anyone help, pleas?
Thanks!

Re: GPS EXIF strangeness

Hi Max, I'm with 1and1 and have the same problem. Basically if your on a standard plan they won't install the extension as it uses to much resources there end. However if you have root access you can install the extensions yourself(your paying for the privilege). You will have to research how to install it properly though. I would install a home server and try it at home before ruining your database.

Window server you can create through your windows pc. Linux will have to be done as a duel boot system or in a virtual system. Once again research what will be best for you.

Best of luck.
