Using a GPU to speed up image manipulation

Hello fellow image geeks,

I searched here and using DDG and didn’t find a related post but I am pretty sure someone  may have asked.

Is there a way to utilize a GPU to speed up image generation or manipulation?

Re: Using a GPU to speed up image manipulation

Nvidia with CUDA software leads in this area. Googling "cuda image processing" could be a good starting point.

Re: Using a GPU to speed up image manipulation

The answer to this would depend upon which GPU you have on which OS.

I had tremendous problems with my AMD GPU on Arch Linux. Various searches on the Arch, Pixls.us and other forums showed me I was not alone and not only Linux users were suffering. During those searches I saw fewer problems with Nvidia GPUs and they appeared simpler to sort out.

It would help people to help you if you state such information up front. e.g. GPU name, which operating system you use, what you are trying to do with it.

Linux drivers for AMD GPUs are different for, say, raw image processor software and CGI software. Be careful if using, for instance, both darktable and Blender, to get the mix right. More straightforward if using just one of them.

Confused? So was I.
