Help with HEIC files from iPhone

Hi,

I am in the process of setting up a Piwigo installation on my own server to consolidate the photos from my girl friend any myself. Upload already works via onedrive (from phones automatically) or manual from the camera.

I ran into one issue and I am rather confused, does Piwigo really not support HEIC?

I checked permissions, ... and it shows the JPG files, but not the HEIC from my girl friends iPhone. I am just surprised because iPhone is a rather large market and I am wondering if I am doing anything wrong here.

I did use the search and found a few posts, one saying HEIF is not supported by browser (not even by safari???), the other one he needed to switch something on the iPhone app to see HEIC files. So that didn't really make it more clear for me.

If Piwigo really does not support HEIC, how are you guys doing this? If it does support it, any hints what I can be doing wrong?

You help is very much appreciated, Thank you.

Re: Help with HEIC files from iPhone

All web browsers are unable to display HEIF images, therefore Piwigo cannot support it. You'll need to convert to JPEG.

Re: Help with HEIC files from iPhone

Note that HEIF is only a container file format, unfortunately it became a synonym for HEIC as well; HEIC uses the HEVC (H.265) codec stored in HEIF, AVIF uses the AV1 codec stored in HEIF. Recent Apple products support HEIC, but apparently Safari does not. Other browsers will support AVIF, but not HEIC (at least in the near future).

Re: Help with HEIC files from iPhone

you could experiment with webp. It seems to be widely adopted. Seems only Chrome supports AVIF right now.
