Re: Piwigo for android

Hello ralphmiller,

Indeed there is an app for Android available !

You can get it here: https://piwigo.org/get-piwigo

Or on F-Droid: https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.piwigo.android/

Regards,
Valentin

Re: Piwigo for android

does not have the same functions as iOs!
- photos are uploaded one at a time;
- photos and albums cannot be deleted;
- download is not possible.

@phan you are completely right, the android app is not "finished" yet. If you have some java development skills feel free to join the team and implement missing features.

Re: Piwigo for android

In light of the poor support in the Piwigo team supported Android App for features of the server, I wrote and released an app that is more complete in nature. It is called "Piwigo Client". It's available in the Google Play Store and there are two versions. The app isn't perfect by any means, it has been a real learning curve to wrap my head around Android development, but I'm told by users that they're basically happy, and if I mess something up, it's generally fixed quickly (sometimes quicker if a user reports it) - check out some of the reviews.

1. Free version that has a few limitations, but allows you to see what the app does support
2. A Full featured paid version that essentially is the free version, but a few extra features and no adverts.

Re: Piwigo for android

Thanks for the effort, but.. No source code? Not available on F-Droid? Thanks, but no.
Why didn't you work with/on https://github.com/Piwigo/Piwigo-Android to add features?

Re: Piwigo for android

To answer your questions;

* Google Play is the worldwide default location for Android Apps to be hosted. As a developer new to Android, using a different hosting site made no sense. Now, I could add it to F-Droid, but that would be more time spent on releases, and appears only to be for free apps in any case.

* I looked at the Piwigo Android App before I started, but it had been written in a very different direction to that which I wanted to go and I couldn't see how to change it. I had done no Android development previously, so wanted to start from a clean slate in private - I felt this would be easier. In addition, doing this with a community of active users would have added a lot of stress at a time I really didn't need it.

Once I had a reasonable app that I was finding useful, I released it on the google play store. At this point, I can say that it has gone through a number of issues due to the volume of device types out there, and this was a lot of stress to manage, so in hind sight, I did the right thing.

The source code is available to view on GitHub if you or anyone else wish to see how awful it is, but it is not released under an open source licence. If you don't like this, then, you I totally accept your decision not to use the app.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Re: Piwigo for android

Nothing prevents you from releasing a paid version on the Google Play Store in parallel with a free and open F-Droid version that is built by the F-Droid folks, but of course the source code repository must be public and come wit a proper open source license for the latter.
