[resolved] Attempting upgrade from 2.8.6 to 15.5.0

Hello all,

I have a piwigo install that was originally setup around 2016, it is currently at version 2.8.6, has about 150 albums with around 6500 images.  I would like to upgrade my piwigo install to the latest version before migrating it to a new machine.  I've made a complete backup of the Apache 2.4 install that it's running in, and have made a complete dump of the mySQL5.7 database.  I tried using the built-in update page in the admin pages and that doesn't seem to have worked at all (it simply returned a blank page after running a few minutes).

Any pointers on how to achieve this upgrade would be greatly appreciated!

Note that my version does not appear to have environment details?  But here is what I've got:
Running on Apache 2.4
Database mySQL 5.7
Piwigo version 2.8.6
Plugs installed:
Admin Tools
Extended Description
LocalFiles Editor
Menalto2Piwigo

Piwigo URL: not publicly accessible

Re: [resolved] Attempting upgrade from 2.8.6 to 15.5.0

An update...
I didn't think to mention this in the previous post, but I am currently running PHP 5.6.29.
I gather from more research and testing I've done today that this is likely a problem that will keep me from directly upgrading.

That's fine - I'm ok with building out a new tech stack to run the latest Piwigo on, but I'm still at bit of a loss on how to actually transfer my existing albums to the new installation...

My research leads me to believe that recommend approach is:
1) Dump the old piwigo database with 'mysqldump -u piwigo -p piwigo > olddb.sql'
2) Install fresh
3) Copy over the old ./galleries, ./upload, ./plugins, ./tools, ./themes directories to the new install
4) Load the new piwigo database from the olddb.sql file

That all makes sense to me, up to step 4.  Wouldn't that be overwriting the new database with the old database structure?  I'm assuming there have been structural changes to the db in the 35 releases between 2.8.6 and 15.5.0?

Just to restate (and possibly clarify) - I have an existing piwigo instance (self hosted) that I'm looking to upgrade to the latest release.  This instance has thousands of images with descriptions on the albums and images.  Just looking for the proper way to migrate the existing albums and descriptions to a new installation.

Any insight greatly appreciated!

Ok, success!

I finally managed to internalize @erAck's response in this thread: [Forum, post 189517 by a.serain in topic 33540] Upgrade from version 2.9.5 to latest and follow his instructions to the letter.  This resulted in a successful upgrade of from my original 2.8.6 installation to 15.5.0

Indeed, the equation "PHP 5 + Piwigo 2.8 + Piwigo 15" has no solution. You can't run Piwigo 15 on PHP 5 and you can't run Piwigo 2.8 on PHP 8. So you have to update manually your Piwigo once you have updated PHP from 5 to 8.
