I received an email from Piwigo.com Support in reply to my question if this also applies to hosted Piwigo:
Thought to share it here for those who are interested. I guess they won't mind.
I won't go too deep into details about how directories are managed, but I can tell you that Piwigo.com servers are not "opened to connection" from anybody. Only a few team members have an SSH access to servers. The owner of the directories or the permissions don't have that much importance here.”

After CHMOD
an error occurred
Give write access (chmod 777) to "_data/" directory at the root of your Piwigo installation
Not OK !!!
