Question about developing paid apps for Piwigo

I've just started using Piwigo and so far I'm pretty impressed with everything I can do on a desktop.

I'm also a pretty heavy Android user, and would like develop an app. Would I be able to make it a paid app (something like $2), or would that not be allowed?

Re: Question about developing paid apps for Piwigo

Hello

http://piwigo.org/basics/license

as long as I don't sell the software itself you can do whatever you want (in the field of the GPL licence)
For example http://piwigo.com sells host services and support dedicated to Piwigo

I don't know what you plan but there are already
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta … org.piwigo (the most "official" app)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta … galandroid
+ the natively mobile phones compatible theme

Re: Question about developing paid apps for Piwigo

I was trying those two out and unfortunately don't work so well (or at all).

They were both made in 2011, which appears to be before the web API was released. I'm thinking that working with the API will lead to a more stable app.

Re: Question about developing paid apps for Piwigo

Let's take another example with the export plugin for Lightroom : it is sold $15.

There is absolutely no problem if you want to sell your Android app. Just ask us about the way you want to use the trademark "Piwigo" in your app name.

Don't hesitate to make a nice application (see what has been done for [Forum, topic 22237] Piwigo on Windows Phone). If you need any help or advice, just ask.

Of course it would be nice that you decide to make your application opensource.

Re: Question about developing paid apps for Piwigo

I use Piwigo app on both my devices, and it work perfectly, if you have issues you should contact the author to help him improve it.

And these apps DO use the API, and don't known where you get the info that the API was added in 2011, it's false

The web API is much older than 2011 :-) and both apps use the web API.

I only speak about Piwigo Mobile (not ReGalAndroid), and yes you're right: a full refresh would be welcomed.

Just like mistic, for me Piwigo Mobile works fine. But I think the UX could be improved. It doesn't use native Java so it is not as fast as it could be. And maybe that if the app was written in Java it could be possible to select several photos at once.

Re: Question about developing paid apps for Piwigo

For me it would be great to have a native piwigo App for iOS. For example, if I see the Flickstackr App - usability of this App is much better than the mobile website of Flickr. I'm absolutely willing to pay or this kind of app - maximum 9, 99 Euro.

So, I’m looking forward to see something from you ;-)

Best, Hagen

Slightly offtopic but related.

And I wish to add that for these 15$ the author provides excellent service.

On the default footer the text "powered by piwigo" links to piwigo.org. I wonder if it would be more beneficial for piwigo to link to piwigo.com?

Re: Question about developing paid apps for Piwigo

The default footer of the software ?

don't forget the the software and piwigo.com are not related, the volunteers of the development team (which I'm part of) do not get any advantages of the benefits of piwigo.com company

it's the exact same model for wordpress : wordpress.org and wordpress.com are two independent entities

I did not know that. Good to know. Then I misunderstood the sentence of plg "piwigo.com sells host services and support dedicated to Piwigo"

Hello !!!

You see, I do not forget it. I was thinking about it and it is not clear for me. I indeed thought that piwigo.com earns some money to support the piwigo.org. It is not possible to run on voluntary only, or is it? I contribute with eager to piwigo.org with my translations and I wonder if piwigo.com uses it in their business.

Hi :-)

Piwigo.com can use translation as any users.

You love Piwigo so don't hesitate to participate, learn more on the "Contribute to Piwigo" page. If you don't have much time for contribution, you can also help the project with a donation.

This sentence was written by mistic, not by me :-)

Piwigo.com sells hosting dedicated to Piwigo.

Piwigo is managed by the Piwigo Assocation. Piwigo.com is managed by the Pigolabs company. Piwigo is a requirement for Piwigo.com, but Piwigo can live without Piwigo.com (and has done it for many years before Piwigo.com was born). Even if I'm the founder of Piwigo and Piwigo.com, I make the difference and keeping Piwigo independant and free is important.

It has never been planned to change the footer of Piwigo for a link to Piwigo.com (I even wonder if it won't be better to have a link to Piwigo.org even on Piwigo.com accounts).
