Hello All,
I want to add a section in the main area of my main page which shows the latest photos. Do I need to edit the HTML templates? Or is there a config option or extension that will do it? I tried searching extensions, but wasn't finding anything relevant.

Try the PWG Stuffs extension, there is an option for recent photos.

Yup, found that not long after posting this.
I wish it had some options though, like how many pages to show, link to more recent pics, etc.
