I've been working on a new plugin which replaces the "apache_authentication" option, and is much more flexible.

I use an Apache module (mod_auth_tkt) that sets REMOTE_USER based on a SSO cookie.  I needed custom login/logout links, and the ability for non-SSO users to login with a native Piwigo account (ie. when SSO was "a guest") - so regular apache auth wasn't working...

I also added an auto-registration option, and detailed control over the default profile created.  There's quite a few options really, and I've tested it pretty thoroughly on my local gallery.
