Hello, I have an album which has other albums inside. I want to set the cover for this root album, but the picture selector is disabled when I go to edit the album. I can set album covers for the albums inside my root album, just not the root one.

Assuming you do not mean the root album but in your screenshot the displayed Travel album instead (which is the parent album of others), browse to the album in the gallery and the photo you want as thumbnail, then in the Admin top toolbar click Edit -> Properties page, in Album thumbnail pick the album(s) you want the photo assign to, Save settings.

I think I understand what you mean, but here's the issue I'm running into:
#tl;dr
How can I manually set the album cover for a top-level album (e.g., "events") that has no images of its own, only sub-albums, instead of letting it randomly pick one?
Imagine this scenario:
I have a top-level album called "events." Inside it, I have sub-albums for "2023" and "2024" (the "events" album itself has no images, just the yearly sub-albums). Under those yearly sub-albums, I have more sub-albums for specific events (e.g., parties, outings) with photos in them.
The problem is that while I can set album covers for the specific event sub-albums, I can’t control the cover for the top-level "events" album. Instead, it randomly picks one from the sub-albums. I want to be able to choose a specific image (from my event sub-albums) to use as the cover for "events."
Any suggestions on how to set this up?
events (top-level album, no images) <-- Image vacation_2023_cover.jpg should be the cover here. |-- 2023 (sub-album, no images) <-- Image vacation_2023_cover.jpg should be the cover here. | |-- Birthday (event album, with photos) | | |-- birthday_cake.jpg <-- This is the image I chose as the album cover for this album. | |-- Vacation (event album, with photos) | |-- vacation_beach.jpg <-- This is the image I chose as the album cover for this album. |-- 2024 (sub-album, no images) |-- Concert (event album, with photos) | |-- concert_stage.jpg <-- This is the image I chose as the album cover for this album. |-- Road Trip (event album, with photos) |-- roadtrip_car.jpg <-- This is the image I chose as the album cover for this album.
To clarify:
For the "Birthday" album, I set birthday_cake.jpg as the cover.
For the "Vacation" album, I set vacation_beach.jpg as the cover.
For "Concert," I set concert_stage.jpg as the cover, and for "Road Trip," I set roadtrip_car.jpg.
For the "2023" album, I want vacation_2023_cover.jpg to be the cover.
For the "events" album (top-level), I also want vacation_2023_cover.jpg to represent the entire collection.
This setup allows a clear hierarchy for album covers, but I can’t figure out how to manually set the cover for "events" without it being random.

Again: in the image's properties page locate the Album thumbnail field and there pick the album(s) you want the image to be the album thumbnail. Note you can assign it to multiple albums.

To whom it may concern,
If you’re looking to set a photo as the album cover for one or more albums in Piwigo, here’s a step-by-step guide:
1. Find the picture: Identify the photo you want to use as the album cover in your gallery.
2. Open the picture: Click on the photo to view it. The URL will look something like this:
yourdomain.com/picture.php?/48/category/11
3. Navigate to the properties page:
At the top of the picture's page, click on Edit, then choose Properties page from the dropdown.
(Note: The layout may vary depending on the theme you are using.)
4. Open the "Edit photo" page: This page allows you to update photo properties (e.g., "Edit photo #48").
5. Select the albums for the thumbnail:
- Locate the Album thumbnail field.
- Click the box to open a dropdown menu showing all albums.
- Select every album for which you want this photo to serve as the thumbnail. You can choose multiple albums.
6. Save your changes: Click Save to apply your selections. Once saved, you’ll see a confirmation message like "Photo information updated" at the top of the page.
