My camera also added Makernotes and my Debian stable PHP version has the read_exif_data bug I tried to workaround it by a small plugin which uses the commandline tool exiftool to read teh GPS data: Feel free to give it a try and report success or problems:

Somebody above mentioned php 5.6.25, I can confirm that does not work.
In what directory is "exiftool -makernotes:all= -ext jpg -r *" run?
After running it in _data/i/upload and upload I see no additional pins in the GPS map, and the test synchronize settings show no photos or albums updated.
So close... (as much as I hate loosing lens info).

Hi,
I have exactly the same problem since the end of 2016, and it start to make me totally crazy !
I can read GPS data from IPhone pictures but not from my Canon 6D camera.
If I take an old picture in my galery wich is recognise with OpenStreetMap plugin and I add it again OpenStreetMap didn't find GPS data !!!
I have asked to my web hoster to move my acount on another server with php7.
Now I have the possibility to change version of PHP like :
Piwigo 2.9.0
Système d'exploitation: Linux
PHP: 5.5.38 (Montrer les informations) [2017-05-17 10:15:39]
MySQL: 5.6.35 [2017-05-17 12:15:39]
Bibliothèque graphique: External ImageMagick 6.7.2-7
PHP: 5.6.30 (Montrer les informations) [2017-05-17 10:13:38]
PHP: 7.0.18 (Montrer les informations) [2017-05-17 11:21:06]
and it don't work !
When I use "Read Metadata" plugin with all version of PHP I have this error :
read_exif_data(072 - Japon.jpg): IFD data bad offset: 0xFFFFFCCC length 0x1285 in /home/public_html/galerie/plugins/read_metadata/admin.php on line 150
Can someone tel me if he use one of these version of PHP and if you have an idea to solve this ?

as I wrote in the thread "Status of the GPS / makernote issue?", also PHP versions: 7.1.4 didn't help.
IMNSHO this is very disappointing.

Thanks for the "bad news" OliverB ..... Because I negotiate with my web hoster to install PHP 7.1 to try to solve the issue.
I use Piwigo with exif enable for 5 years now and I never have issues with exif. Moreover now with PHP7, I can't use a very nice plugin "Advanced Metadata" because it's no longer maintain.....

I have made a plugin with uses ImageMagick instead of exiftool for all who cannot use exiftool at their webspace.

Hello ZeBe,
At first, I want to thank you for your plugin, it works pretty well. But currently I face some problems with it and for that I had created a new post here.
https://piwigo.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=28909
Is it possible to take a look ?
Thanks!
