Hello from Honolulu:
I'm a Piwigo newbie, just emigrating from Gallery2. After a long, dedicated weekend of wrestling with Piwigo, I think I finally have it doing what I want. The results have been good, and my high-school students think it is a huge improvement. The plugin User Tags was the one missing piece I really needed; with it, I can pretty much kiss Gallery2 goodbye.
I would like to ask a question about uploading via FTP. I have it working correctly, but I am wondering if I'm making it unnecessarily difficult for myself. Following the instructions at Photos --> Add --> FTP + Synchronization, I figured out that when I FTP a bunch of photos in a new album, each album needs:
* a folder for the album itself, which contains
* all the web-friendly, resized images,
* a folder of the original, HD images, which must be titled "pwg_high," and
* a folder of thumbnails, generated by Piwigo at Tools --> Thumbnails, after the original images have been uploaded but before synchronizing.
I created a couple of workflows in Apple's Automator that generate the pwg_high folders and resize the originals, so it's not as much of a pain as it could be when uploading 1500 photos, as I did this weekend, but doing so when those photos are divided into eight albums meant a LOT of very careful resizing and FTPing.
The instructions don't mention that the HD folder MUST be called pwg_high, but I couldn't make it work any other way. I guess my question boils down to: am I FTPing my albums the easiest way, or is there some shortcut I'm missing, which would explain why the instructions contain fewer steps than my own process?
Thanks for any help or advice you could lend.

Hi scrivener,

It's not written exactly this way, but I thought that the example given (the filetree) + the following explanation were enough:

Photo elements can have a high quality file associated. As for wedding.jpg in the example above. No prefix on the high quality picture.
By the way, I've read this page today (which I didn't do for at least 2 or 3 years) and I saw that it was written pwg-high somewhere instead of pwg_high. I have to fix that.

You seem to do it the right way. FTP + Sync is the "historical" way of adding photos to Piwigo. In 2008, we have started the pLoader project (and now several remote softwares can upload photos to Piwigo) and in 2010 the web upload form (which is still getting improved, you'll see that in Piwigo 2.3). In my personal opinion (I'm Piwigo founder), FTP + sync is outdated but we keep it because it's perfect for those (like me, in the old time) who have some preparation scripts and automated FTP transfer tools. If you're not in that case, you should take a look at pLoader and remote software of web upload form.

Thanks PLG for the info. I haven't tried the ploader yet but will give it a look this week.
It seems all the info is there between the explanation and the filetree, but it only makes immediate sense if you've already done it and know what the process is. I had to stare at that filetree for many minutes before it became clear to me what I was looking at, and even then I wasn't sure: I did a test FTP with just a few photos first.
Thanks again.

plg, you mention that there are some remote software programs that can specifically upload photos to Piwigo. Can you please name a few?
pLoader does not work my Mac as I am running Lion and I have to use it on the PC, which I hate to do :)

digiKam (www.digikam.org) has an "export to Piwigo" function and this is available through kipi-plugins to other KDE graphics packages on Linux.
There are also plugins for Shotwell and Lightroom. Jiwigo (www.jiwigo.com) is a java application for loading images to your Piwigo gallery.
