using phpinfo.php to find the info my upload_max_filesiz is set to 2M
i don't have access to server side settings so if i use a .htaccess file would the info in the file be just (as below) or is it wrapped in some way (module, directory ?) and if so how, and does this file just go in the site root. Any help welcome
php_value upload_max_filesize 5m
php_value post_max_size 5m
php_value max_execution_time 600

difficult to answer
It depends on what your hosting allows

that was quick
my host wont change anything server side, does say they allow htaccess to override but wont say what, so its a case of try it and see if it makes a difference. I've already uploaded a htaccess file with contents as shown this made no difference to phpinfo.php returned values - should it ?
Was about to create images of different file size and see what actually would upload, but as i know nothing about php, server, settings and so on thought I'd ask as to if anyone had more knowledge than me

tried to upload a 5mb file and got a return of 'exceeds the size limit (2048)' so the htaccess made no difference
