Hello,
First off I love Piwigo and what you are doing. I am really trying to make this work for my personal site but I am struggling. It is so slow, and I am wondering what I am doing wrong.
I just tried zenphoto on the same server and it is so much faster creating thumbnails and caching them. Piwigo definately has the features I want but too slow for use.
I had an existing zenphoto install and a fresh install of piwigo, I moved one album from my gallery over to piwigo, did a ftp sync and now the gallery is displayed. Loading was so slow I could barely use it. I tried disabling all the thumbnail options and cleaned the cache but it still took forever.
Where can I start looking to speed it up?
Thanks,
Mike

Hi spudz000,
Is it always slow or just on the first load of the page?
Piwigo generates the thumbnails and stores them in a cache. The first load is slow and then it just displays thumbnails from the cache.

I believe you are right but if I upload a couple hundred pictures it is unbearable to even get through them once. Zenphoto also builds it's cache thumb the first time but is not even close in terms of speed.

hello
the best solution for ftp pictures : use the Batch Mananger!

ZenPhoto and Piwigo must use slightly the same algorithm to resize photo (GD or ImageMagick). In case of FTP, I don't know when zenPhoto generates the thumb+medium size.
If you add photos another way than FTP, Piwigo automatically generates the thumbnail in cache. I mean with the web upload form or with any remote software like Lightroom, pLoader or iPhoto.
For now (before we may find a better way to generate cache fro FTP added photos) use the [Administration > Photos > Batch Manager] screen, predefined filter "All", select "All photos", action "Generate multiple size images", as suggested by flop25.

I do have two Piwigo sites, both hosted by DreamHost. After latest upgrade one of them, namely andreifiles.com started responding extremely slowly: front end, admin end and pLoader. The other one seems to work fine. Any idea?

Are they on the same server?

Both sites are hosted by DreamHost, that does not mean they are physically sitting on the the same server. I opened a ticket with DreamHost support, waiting to hear from them.

Thanks for your patience. It took some time for the DreamHost support team to fix the issues on the server. The site is up, working now faster then before.
Merry Christmas everybody, and Happy New Year!

What was the issue with dreamhost ?
Because I'm doing some tests on dreamhost too and it's very slow to generate the cache.

How slow it is? just to have a look. With a link of course

Going by what others have said I think you might find Dreamhost are doing some maintenance/migrating. Users are being moved around the servers some are getting PHP upgrades. The migration can cause servers to run slow as they copy files over etc.
If its running slow then just send a message to their help desk and it will no doubt get sorted quickly.

DreamHost
I was told that regardless of unlimited space and bandwidth they are still trying to limit activity of each user to avoid potential abuse. I have number of projects under my account, and two of them are quite heavy on space usage, so it looked like I have reached the limit, and the server was halting scripts.
The solution was creating new user sub-account within my existing account and moving a project or two over, thus taking some load off from my initially single user account. It has not changed my doing business with DreamHost, not a penny extra.
The guys were very helpful despite of Christmas season, pleasure to deal with.
If you decide to check the DreamHost, tell them I had sent you using my reference link: http://www.dreamhost.com/r.cgi?255174.
Hope it helped.

Actually it's mainly the cache generation that took a lot of time (something like 10s for one image), the gallery itself is not really slow (specially as I'm in Belgium and the website is hosted in the USA).
You can have a look here http://testpiwigo.dreamhosters.com but the cache generation is running so it could slow your browsing...
Many thanks for your answers.

Dreamhost answered to my ticket saying that the processes were killed because they used too much RAM.
I didn't even saw it...
I think I wont be able to use piwigo.
