English speaker -> en_UK will become en_GB and en_US

Hi :-)

Since the birth of Piwigo we have used en_UK as the default English language version. Standard web usage is to have en_GB for British English (United Kingdom/Great Britain) and en_US for American English (United States). Piwigo will therefore introduce these "various" English languages in the future.

In Piwigo 2.5, we have introduced the feature "fallback language". For example fr_CA (Quebec) has fr_FR (France) as fallback language. If a language key is not translated in fr_CA, then Piwigo will use the fr_FR version.

In Piwigo 2.5.3
* en_GB (fallback on en_UK) will be added to match specific British wording

In Piwigo 2.6
* en_US will be added (fallback on en_UK) to match specific American wording

To reduce the impact of these changes, en_UK will stay the default technical language. Extension creators will still create the language/en_UK directory. Then translators will decide if the extension requires en_GB or en_US specifically.

If users request and participate in the translation, other flavours of the English language can be added:

en_AU -> English (Australia)
en_CA -> English (Canada)
en_NZ -> English (New Zealand)
en_EI  -> English (Eire)
en_ZA -> English (South Africa)
en_JM -> English (Jamaica)
en_029 -> English (Caribbean)
en_BZ -> English (Belize)
en_TT -> English (Trinidad y Tobago)
en_ZW -> English (Zimbabwe)
en_PH -> English (Philippines)
en_MY -> English (Malaysia)
en_IN -> English (India)
en_SG -> English (Singapore)
.......

Re: English speaker -> en_UK will become en_GB and en_US

After many discussions with ddtddt, we have edited the topic. The problem was that we want:

1) to comply with the ISO language codes
2) to reduce the impact on extensions

so now we say that en_UK will stay as it is now, ie the default technical language, the one that is filled by developpers (core or extensions)

I like the principle as now proposed.

(en_UK is the equivalent of English as spoken in the 18th Century before the American declaration of independence - now the Yanks have en_US which they can customize and we Brits have en_GB to customise ;)

Some of the words used in en_GB are not British spellings...

Re: English speaker -> en_UK will become en_GB and en_US

Would you be so kind as to post some examples that you have identified?
Which version of Piwigo are you referring to?  The en_GB in version 2.5.3 is only at a very early stage in preparation for v2.6
