Has anyone had any trouble figuring out how to send emails to user/subscribers as an Admin/Webmaster?

I can see the list of users, but can only send emails as "notifications" such as to notify the user when they have been subscribed or unsubscribed to notifications, or when new photos have been added, etc.  What I need to be able to do is select a group of users and send customized emails.

Is this possible?  I installed the UserAdvManager plugin and it didn't correct the issue.  Is there another way? Has anyone else troubleshooted this?
