In the galleries folder i create folders for each album. I copy th files into them. Then in piwigo i do a synchronize, and that picks up all the files and folders.

Piwigo does not support the import of RAW image formats.
There are different methods to import photos into Piwigo. The "best" one for you depends on your needs. When you add photos, the methods are all explained there.
