Is there a way to set the number of album thumbnails to something other than 20 per page? I'd like to have a somewhat higher number, and have looked for variables , like albThumbs, that might control the number in the them or in general settings.

No luck so far. Can someone point me to the place where this setting is made?

It's a user preference, so edit the user, even guest.

I tried adjusting the number of photos per page here - but that does not affect the album thumbnails (on the next level up). Am I missing something?

Ah, album thumbnails = number of albums, so it may be Configuration -> Options, Display, Number of albums per page; if not overridden by the theme.
