Thanks for all the help!
I did some PHP testing and determined that EXIF wasn't actually installed, even though it was sorta listed on the PHPinfo page. I contacted my web host to see what's up, and they installed it.
Now my test page works and piwigo isn't complaining about it any more! And the icing on the cake is that my portrait images are now rotated correctly! YAY!!
Apparently I was heading into the weeds with 'exiftool' (command line), and I should have been focusing on PHP EXIF. Live and learn.
Thanks again for the help and suggestions. I'm looking forward to using this platform more. Very cool.
