It is not recommended (for upgrade reasons) to add a field to the _images table.
Next version (Piwigo 2.0.0) will provide a new free ordering system.

Anyway, with LocalFiles Editor plugin you could add to your config_local this parameter:

$conf['order_by'] = ' ORDER BY new_column DESC';

It should work.
